Ronaldo was on the global rise scoring often at both club and international levels and received his first Premier League title in the 2006-07 season. As the Premier League’s top scorer, Ronaldo was named the FIFPro World Player of the Year in 2008. Also in 2008, Ronaldo achieved the Ballon d’Or award-quite the achievement for such a young soccer player.

As the youngest child of Maria Dolores dos Santos Averio and Jose Dinis Averio, his second given name, “Ronaldo,” was an obvious choice to his father naming him after the then US president Ronald Regan, but not for his presidency, Regan was Ronaldo’s father’s favorite actor. Cristiano has two older sisters and one older brother.

His early career began at the age of only eight where he played for the amateur team C.F. Andorinha-in 1995, Cristiano signed with CD Nacional, a local club. Overjoyed with his success, the Sporting CP club signed him after a three-day trial run; the amount of the signing has never been released. At the Sporting CP in Portugal, Ronaldo trained at the Alcochete, a footballer’s academy and was the only player ever to play for Sporting’s U-16, U-17, U-18 and B-team. In 2003, the Manchester United players begged for Sir Alex Ferguson to sign him-and so became a footballer and fan favorite.

With a team behind him, Cristiano, was the very first Portuguese player to sign with an English team and he requested number 23, not wanting the number 7 tied to such players as Eric Cantona or David Beckham, among others; there was sense in Cristiano to be his own player and that he was. His team debut was a 60th-minute substitute winning 4.0 over the Bolton Wanderers. He scored United’s thousandth Premier League goal in October of 2005 and fans voted him to enter his first FIFPro Special Young Player of the Year awards in that same year.

In 2006, Ronaldo attained consecutive Barclays Player of the Month awards, only the third player in history to do this since Dennis Bergkamp in 1997 and Robbie Fowler in 1996. Cristiano’s 50th career goal with Manchester United came against rivals Manchester City F.C. when they claimed their first Premier League title in just four years. Again, Ronaldo was voted the FIFPro Special Young Player of the Year Award and thought it looked like he might switch forces to play with the Real Madrids, he signed with United in April of 2006 for a cool $31 million a year-he became the highest player in United’s history.

The prestigious PFA Players’ Player of the Year, the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, and the PFA Young Player of the Year awards were taken by Cristiano for the 2006-2007 season. However, Ronaldo has been known to rave up with some antics, and these got him banned for three matches during the 2007-08 season. But, he was allowed to play again after he discussed with his coach no longer letting opposing team players get his ire up. He still wound up scoring a record-setting 35 goals for the season; George Best had 32 in 1967-1968. Ronaldo was made team captain in March of 2008.

Just as it seemed Cristiano might head for the Real Madrid team, he remained committed to United for another year. Scoring is 100th and 101st goals in United’s 5-0 win over Stroke City in November, it seemed Ronaldo was headed for greatness, something most footballers only dream of. To end his season, Ronald accepted Manchester United’s first Ballon d’Or award since George Best won it in 1968. The magnificent Ronaldo finished his season with 446 points-quite the accomplishment for such a young player. We await the 2008-09 season to see more ways Cristiano will wow his fans all over the world.

Ronaldinho

Born to Miguelina, and cared for by his sisters and brother after his father’s death when he was only eight, Ronaldinho achieved his first cap with the Brazilian senior team in 1999 with club Gremio under head coach Celso Roth. In 2001, Arsenal FC wanted Ronaldinho but this move would not go through as Ronaldinho was unable to obtain a work permit. Eventually, Ronaldinho would sign a five-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain FC where some reported he enjoyed his nightlife more than football. Unhappy in Paris, Ronaldiho finally went back to Barcelona in 2004.

Ronaldinho and his talented teammates Ronald and Rivaldo mesmerized onlookers at the Copa America in Paraguay. Ronaldinho scored Brazil’s fifth goal in their 7-0 trouncing of rival Venezuela. When Ronaldinho scored the game-winning goal off of an astounding 30-yard free kick which completely baffled England’s goalie David Seaman at 2002′s FIFA World Cup in Japan, he had made what has hence been known as the “Wonder Goal”. Having taken the quarterfinal, his team eventually won the World Cup. Ronaldinho was rewarded by being named part of the all-tournament team.

Winning almost every possible award in soccer, Ronaldinho’s prizes include the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, and the UEFA’s Champion League Award in 2006 in Barcelona-that year scoring seven goals in just twelve matches. In 2008, Sport Illustrated magazine put Ronaldinho in the top fifth wealthiest athletes at $37.5 million that included earnings, bonuses, endorsements, and appearances. Only Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, David Beckham, and Kimi Raikkonen beat him in earnings-quite the achievement for the twenty-eight year old.

During his 200th match in the summer of 2008, Ronaldinho dismayed his fans and spectators of soccer by going down with a right leg injury–an injury that got him sitting the bench for the rest of the season. Then to complicate matters, Ronaldinho and his club got into an argument over his decision to play in the Bejing Olympic games. Nevertheless, Ronaldinho eventually got a deal with the Italian Club AC Milan and went on to play in the Olympics alongside his countrymen.

Ronaldinho did turn down a $25.5 million offer from Manchester City to join AC Milan in a three-year contract-in Barcelona, he was receiving $21 million. Forced to lose his favorite jersey number 10, as it was being worm by Clarence Seedorf, he chose 80 for his year of birth. Proving just as valuable in Milan, he scored his first goal in a 1-0 victory over Internazionale in September of 2008.

Ronaldinho drove Milan into a 2-2 draw after they had fallen behind 2-0 against Sporting Braga in November 2008′s UEFA Cup and then scored a match-winner in the 93rd minute of the match. Ronaldinho’s brother Roberto has been driving his brother as his agent, and has gotten him endorsement after endorsement so that his great soccer playing sibling is booked up with them through 2014. And Ronaldinho apparently enjoys his current home of Milan, Italy much more than he did Paris.

Ronaldinho became a father in 2005 when his son Joao was born. The boy is named after his grandfather and his mother is Brazilian dancer Janaina Mendes. But, when it comes to soccer, where will he ultimately end up? Only Ronaldinho and Roberto know. But with his immense global popularity, it seems Ronaldinho would be a great fit on any team. Maybe some are already thinking, “what about the United States?

George Foreman Boxer

George Foreman is a household name with a long and storied career. He not only has the distinction of being pegged as one of the top 25 boxers of all time, he was also the oldest boxer to win a heavyweight title. A man of diverse talents, hes also an ordained Christian pastor with his own church, and an accomplished businessman in his own right.

He finished his amateur career with an incredible 27-0 record before turning professional in 1969. That year, he won a total of 12 fights, with 11 via knockout. The following year, he continued on in pursuit of the undisputed heavyweight title by winning every one of his 12 fights in 1970, again with 11 of them by knockout. In 1971, Foreman won seven more victories. He had earned a phenomenal record of 32-0 by then, and was considered by the WBC and WBA to be the top challenger. Foreman continued his victorious streak with an additional five victories in 1972. He won each of these victories in three rounds.

Foreman retained his heavyweight title until 1974 when he defended his title against Mohamed Ali, the former champion. This bout was known as “The Rumble in the Jungle” and was fought in Zaire. This was Foremans first defeat in his professional boxing career. After this defeat, Foreman remained inactive throughout 1975.

Foreman kept his heavyweight title until his bout with former heavyweight champion Mohamed Ali in 1974. This bout was dubbed the Rumble in the Jungle and took place in the African country of Zaire. Ali defeated Foreman for the first time in Foremans professional career. Foreman was inactive for the rest of 1975 after this crushing defeat.

In 1976, Foreman made his comeback. He continued fighting until he experienced what he describes as a near death experience in Puerto Rico in 1977. Foreman described becoming suddenly and deathly ill in his dressing room after losing a match to Jimmy Young in a 12 round decision. He was terrified by this sudden illness, and turned to God for help. Foreman recounts that God asked him to change his ways, and Foreman became a devout, born again Christian. Foreman jokes that Jimmy Young literally knocked the devil out of him.

He has a large family, ten children, five boys, and five girls. He named all five of his sons George. In order of age they are George Jr., George III, George IV, George V and last but not least George VI.

Foreman is the father of a large family of ten children, including five boys and five girls. Each of Foremans sons is named George. From eldest to youngest, they are George Jr., George III, George IV, George V, and of course, George VI.

Foreman made a second comeback in 1988 after ten years away from the ring. He announced that he would be returning to boxing at the unheard of age of 38. His goal was to prove that age did not have to be a barrier to achieving ones dreams. That year, he went on to win eight fights, though none of his challengers were rated contenders. Foreman won a string of memorable victories, as well as some notable defeats.

Foreman went on to break two boxing records when he regained the heavyweight title after successfully challenging Michael Moorer in Las Vegas on November 5, 1994. He not only became the oldest boxer to win the world heavyweight title; he also broke the record for longest interval between championship wins. He kept boxing until his second retirement in 1999.

His other business ventures include doing commercials for Meineke Mufflers and promotion of his George Foreman Grill. He also began marketing his own brand of Big and Tall clothing through Casual Male in 2004.

He starred in his own sit-com in 1993, was a judge on a realty series, American Inventor. In July of 2008 a reality show, Family Foreman, starring George and his family premiered.

Born in Basel, Switzerland, he grew up in the suburb of Munchenstein. He played several sports as a youth and continues to spend much of his time in the Basel area.

From very early on, Federer seemed destined for athletic success. At age nine he began tennis lessons and moved up to a private tutor by the following year. He was also an accomplished football and cricket player as a youth; Federer continues to play cricket in his spare time. Despite his skill in a number of different sports, it is tennis where Federer decided to make his career. While only fourteen, he won all of the national championships he was eligible to compete for and was invited to train at the Swiss National Tennis Center in Ecublems. In 1996, he would join the ITF Junior Tennis Circuit and turn professional by 1998. In 1998, he won the ITF Junior Tennis championship, the Orange Bowl and the Junior Wimbledon championship – impressive, even for Roger Federer.

While most tennis players are more at home on one type of court or another, Federer’s versatility has made him famous. One sportswriter has said that tennis players can be clay court specialists, grass court specialists, hard court specialists; or they can be like Roger Federer. He is best known for his powerful groundstroke, as well as for being a skilled volleyer and baseliner. Federer uses a hybrid grip which takes elements from the semi-western and eastern strokes.

Through the years, Roger Federer has counted over 57 singles titles. Time magazine named him as one of the influential people in the year 2007. Aside from tennis, Federer is highly involved in a number of charities. He established the Roger Foundation in 2003, helping the disadvantaged people and promoting sports to the young ones. At 27 years old, we are yet to see the best of Roger Federer.

The Masters Golf Winners

This event is an official event which is part of the PGA Tour, the PGA European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour. The tournament is also known as the U.S. Masters and is by invitation only, being operated entirely by its host, the Augusta National Golf Club. The invitation only format of the tournament means that far fewer players participate than in the other major championship tournaments. The Masters is the first of the year\’s major tournaments and is held at the beginning of April each year.

Masters golf winners are awarded the now much coveted green jacket. At one time, people scoffed at the jacket due to its color, but attitudes have changed since and winning this jacket is seen as an honor. The jacket has been awarded to Masters golf winners since 1949 and may wear it for one year, at which point it must be returned to the Augusta National Golf Club, where it awaits the next tournament winner. By tradition, the previous year\’s winner helps the current year\’s winner put on the jacket.

Naturally, there is also a cash prize to be won; Masters Golf winners receive awards out of a total purse of $7.5 million. The champion of the tournament wins a gold medal and $1.35 million and the runner up receives a silver medal and a cash prize, while the lowest scoring player of the day goes home with a crystal vase. Any player who scores a double eagle or a hole in one is given a large crystal bowl; players who score an eagle receive a set of fine crystal goblets. A crystal bowl is also awarded to the winner of the par 3 event held the day before the tournament proper begins.

Some Masters golf winners have earned this honor several times in their careers; Jack Nicklaus is the undisputed all time champion in the Masters, with 6 championship wins between 1963 and 1986. Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer are tied for second with four Masters wins. Gary Player of South Africa is the first player to be a winner of the Masters; he took the championship in 1961.

Thoroughbred Breeding-When Did It Start?

A caputured stallion, later known as Byerlye Turk, was brought back to England in the Sixteenth century and used in a breeding programme with English mares. The offspring were known as the Herod thoroughbred line.

The descendants of this particular stallion and others like him that were brought to England were bred and crossbred to create a line of horses that were very strong but exceedingly fast. The horses had long, strong hind legs in order to produce the fastest speed, a wide girth which enabled a larger lung capacity. The shoulders of these horses are long and sloped to allow an even greater stride. Breeding these horses was an amazing accomplishment.

The United States Of America now has the most thoroughbreds, with approximately 50,000 new foals being registered during the last year. The industry is massive, and billions of dollars are involved. America is the forerunner in thoroughbred racing.

The majority of thoroughbred foals start training as yearlings and racing at two years of age. Unfortunately a large proportion of them are either sold or retired within only a few years due to injuries. All thoroughbred foals birthdays are registered as the 1st January even if they are born on the 15th May!

Thoroughbred horses are usually very highly strung and tempremental and I know from experience do not make very good “all round” horses. In fact a friend of mine has recently purchased a retired thoroughbred racing horse who only responds to stop and gallop! They are, however, good with many people as they are used to having different trainers from such a young age.

Soccer Pele

The game seems nearly inconceivable without him. Pele is a man who seems to have been born to play football. His ball control and speed were both unparalleled; particularly his one of a kind passing skills. Fans serious and casual alike relished every opportunity to watch Pele. It seemed that miraculous plays were in store every time Pele had the ball. In his career, Pele scored 1,283 goals, 12 during World Cup tournaments (in 1958, 1968 and 1970). At the time, Pele was the only player to ever win three World Cup trophies.

Pele was discovered and nurtured by Waldemar de Brito, who began coaching him in 1954. In a mere two years, he began playing professionally and by 1957, Pele was in a starting position on Santos. The same year, Pele won a World Cup – by 1962, he was fielding (and considering) offers from European clubs. The Brazilian government, fearing that Pele would leave for greener pastures, declared him a national treasure, which effectively prevented him from going to a team outside of the country.

Pele continued playing for Santos until the end of his 17th season in 1972. He retired from football but would occasionally suit up during competitive matches. At the start of the 1975 season, he came out of this semi-retirement to play for the New York Cosmos who were part of the North American soccer League. Although many considered him to be past his prime, Pele was responsible for greatly increasing the interest and public awareness of soccer in the United States. In his third and last season with the Cosmos, he led the team to win the 1977 NASL championship.

Pele is still considered to be a national hero in his native Brazil, where his contributions to football are universally acknowledged – something also noticed by FIFA, who have named Pele the official football ambassador to the world. Pele advocates for the underprivileged as well as for the sport which made him a star. It is not for nothing that Pele is known to this day as “The King of Football” and he is a American National Soccer Hall of Fame member.

Every success story is not without struggle. Sugar Shame Mosley scaled and climbed every mountain to become a great boxer. He managed to fight his way towards winning world championship titles at lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight divisions. His fighting achievements made him known as one of the best fighters of this boxing era. His alias, “Sugar”, became a household name to many boxing enthusiasts; “Sugar” as in being owned in the league of other known “Sugars” such as Robinson and Leonard. He had overcome the odds of turning into a boxing pro. Through his years of dominating the boxing arena, Shane Mosley came up the hard way; winning fights and fighting the best competitions which eventually won him three world titles with the 1998 Fighter of the Year award.

His amateur boxing career was every bit as impressive as his professional one: before Mosley turned pro, he had won just about every amateur division title. Before becoming a professional boxer in late 1992, he was twice the US lightweight amateur champ, the US welterweight champ, World Junior champion, and a 1992 Goodwill Games bronze medalist. As an amateur, “Sugar” won over 250 bouts and his arrival to the world of pro boxing was eagerly anticipated by fans and sportswriters alike.

February 1993 saw the debut of Mosley as a professional boxer, when he decisively defeated former California state champion Greg Puente in only five rounds. Even with such an impressive showing, he did not become a household name until he took down the IBF lightweight champion Phillip Holiday to attain a 23-0 record, of which 22 were knockouts. Finally, he was coming to be known for his unique balance of speed, skill and power. His following bout matched him up against Manuel Gomez, who he knocked out in the eleventh round.

Through the years in his career as a boxing pro, Shane Mosley have fought a number of great boxers. He was called the undefeated lightweight champion, finishing 34 fights with a 34-0 record. After he made successful 9 title defenses, he moved up two divisions to face Oscar de la Hoya for his Welterweight title. During his June 17, 2000 fight against de la Hoya, he emerged as the winner, a split decision victory. And that was the start of the beginnings of a great fighter; a fighter that the international boxing scene looks forward to watching in any arena.

Born in Latrobe, PA, Arnold D. Palmer is widely thought to be one of the best golfers ever to play the game. Palmer has been the winner of a number of PGA Tours as well as the Champions Tour since his first big tournament win in 1955. Palmer is simply known as “The King” among many fans and players alike and has achieved worldwide fame. He is acknowledged, along with Gary Player and Jack Nickaus as one of the Big Three in the game. With the advent of televised golf matches in the 1950′s, Palmer’s playing which led to a growing interest in the sport.

Arnold’s father Deacon Palmer was a greens keeper at the Latrobe Country Club (which Palmer bought in 1971), where he learned the game on the then nine hole course there. When he was only seven years old, he scored an impressive 70 – quite an achievement for a seven year old.

It should come as no surprise that Palmer went to Wake Forest University on a golf scholarship; afterwards, he served in the Coast Guard for three years, keeping his golf skills sharp all the while. During his stint in the Coast Guard, he married Winifred Walker, whom he met at a golf tournament in Pennsylvania. In his first season, Palmer came out on top in the Canadian open – he followed up this impressive win with something of a charm offensive, quickly becoming a fan favorite and helping to increase the popularity of the game.

He won his first major championship at the 1958 Masters and by 1960, he claimed his title as one of golf’s leading stars. Signing with sports agent Mark McCormack, in 1960, McCormack was asked in later years what made Arnold so special. He replied, “his good looks, his modest background, the way he played golf, his risk taking and wearing his heart on his sleeve, and his involvement in so many exciting early televised finishes.” Palmer was one the first US player to win The Open Championship in England-Ben Hogan won it in 1953; making Arnold an international star in the eyes of golf fans everywhere. Arnold won seven major championships including The Masters in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964; the US Open in 1960; and, The Open Championship in 1961 and 1962. His best years were perhaps 1960-1963 where he championed 29 PGA Tour events in just four seasons.

Arnold Palmer was the 1960 Sports Illustrated pro athlete of the year; 1960 also saw him winning the coveted Sportsman of the Year award. He continued to win a dedicated fan base (so dedicated, in fact that they came to be known as “Arnie’s Army”). In 1967, Palmer became the first professional golfer to earn more than one million over the course of his career. It is a testament to Palmer’s ability that he continued to win at least one PGA tour event every year until 1970, even against competition from Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus – and in 1971, he won four PGA tour events.

Arnold won the Vardon Trophy for low score average four different times and played on six Ryder Cup teams. By 1980, the acclaimed golfer was eligible for the Senior PGA Tour and with his name alone, helped make the tour successful. The tourney would eventually be renamed as the Champions Tour. On the Senior Tour he won ten events on the tour and with the help of his agent McCormack, Palmer became tops in pay for endorsements, sponsorships, and charity events. He has also won the revered Presidential Medal of Freedom Award presented to him by George W. Bush.

Palmer’s last appearance in the Masters was in 2004; this was his 50th appearance in the tournament. He decided to opt out of future Senior Majors after failing to make the cut for the 2005 US Senior Open. Palmer however went out on top – in the 2004 Bay Hill Invitational, he got his second shot onto the 18th green using a driver from 200 yards away! It was the kind of shot only he could make; and this time, he seems to have impressed even himself.

Beyond golf, Arnold is involved in many businesses including the Bay Hill Club and Lodge (the home of the Arnold Palmer Invitational), helped organize and create The Golf Channel, and helped to build the first golf course in the People’s Republic of China. He started The Arnold Palmer Design Company and moved to Orlando, Florida in 2006. He has owned the Latrobe Country Club since 1971-something Laaaytrobians won’t let anyone forget. In 2000, he was ranked a deserved sixth greatest player of all time in Golf Digest and was awarded the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award (1998) and made it into the World Golf Hall of Fame (1974). Perhaps Palmer’s most popular characteristic is indeed his character-a warm, full of laughter, genuine man who simply loved to play golf.
